Croton100: Grassroots Climate Action in 2024 and Plans for 2025
By: Patty Buchanan
As 2024 draws to a close, and attention turns to planning for 2025, it’s time to reflect on Croton100’s activities in 2024. As a founding and flagship Chapter of CURE100 (Communities United to Reduce Emissions 100%), we share our experience here to solidify and document our learnings. We celebrate our team of volunteers, supporters and donors. They have helped to advance our mission to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Croton to net zero urgently and with high priority, and to inspire other climate advocates who are interested in leading community action to achieve economy-wide decarbonization.
Summary of our 2024 activities
- Creating a unique Climate Action Quilt that spotlights adoption of decarbonizing solutions by the local government, businesses, public facilities and organizations, and households.
- Complementing the Climate Action Quilt with a digital “Spotlight on Decarbonizer” series on social media that profiles households’ actions to reduce GHG emissions, while expressing positive sentiments about decarbonizing and Croton100.
- Promoting our work through our website, social media, CURE100 newsletters, blogs and local print media.
- Engaging in education and advocacy about electric school buses and serving as a resource for others in the region.
- Participating in community events like Earth Day, Summerfest, Welcome Wagon Fall Potluck, and promoting Electric Vehicles (EVs) at Rotary’s Annual Car Show.
- Leading Plastics Free July Plastics Beach Sweep at Senasqua Park.
- Collaborating with other CURE100 chapters and organizations.
- Organizing and participating in field trips to deepen our understanding of GHG emissions in our waste systems and ways to reduce them.
- Supporting legislative efforts to end the use of fossil fuels.
- Providing opportunities for folks who want to adopt and advocate for solutions by volunteering in a local climate action group and helping Croton100 to further its mission.
- Pursuing professional, vocational, personal education and development, apart from Croton100 activities, through participation in climate conferences, webinars, research, and publications.
These actions are more than a list of standalone activities; they are interconnected by collaborative events and relationships. They were accomplished by dozens of hands-on volunteers and supporters in Croton and beyond. Croton100 does not have any paid staff. Our work is made possible by generous donors who provide support for our activities, branding materials, organizational infrastructure, including insurance and digital tool fees.

Aspirations for 2025
In the coming year we hope to:
- Build on the experience and momentum to advance Croton100’s mission in 2025 to reduce GHG emissions in Croton to net zero urgently and with high priority through a combination of advocacy, education, and campaigns.
- Complete and unveil our second Climate Action Quilt that will highlight the solar canopy at the Croton Harmon train station.
- Participate in field trips, which provide fun opportunities to learn and network in a variety of settings to advance our education and advocacy work.
- Collaborate with NYS Assemblywoman Dana Levenberg, and possibly other elected officials, to take a field trip to Albany in April with our Climate Action Quilts to celebrate Croton’s climate leadership. We will also applaud and educate lawmakers about the positive impact policies and incentives have on the adoption of decarbonizing solutions at the community level.
- Engage in similar Croton community events as we have in past years and engage in campaigns to encourage EVs, solar, heat pumps, etc.
- Add to our Spotlight on Decarbonizers series.
- Continue to engage with the Croton100 network of volunteers, supporters, donors, and welcome others to meet us and join us.
- Serve as a flagship chapter of CURE100 that can inspire other chapters.
We expect to face significant hurdles in 2025 due to a shift in national policies that support the fossil fuel industry, while reducing support for decarbonizing solutions. We also anticipate resistance in public engagement due to acrimony in the political atmosphere. We are, nevertheless, hopeful that we can have a significant impact in Croton and beyond due to supportive New York State and local policies, and our strong network of partners. Given the severity and urgency of the climate crisis, we hope that our track record will attract volunteers, supporters, and donors to achieve our 2025 goals. To change everything, we need everyone!
